liesl’s afternoon tea blouse

When Lisa mentioned she was putting together a tutorial for the Afternoon Tea Blouse, I was absolutely thrilled. Honestly, I can't think of anyone better suited to guide others through heirloom sewing than Lisa. Her attention to detail and skill are unmatched. Didn’t she do an incredible job? When I first designed the Afternoon Tea Blouse pattern, I specifically envisioned incorporating lace and exploring creative ways to utilize it throughout the garment. Here’s another approach—less traditional heirloom but potentially much quicker for those of you who love the idea of achieving a similar look without the time commitment. ![Liesl's Afternoon Tea Blouse](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/17d5df69148eba54bffc599949bf2583.jpg) I decided to use a lace panel I had prepared a couple of years ago, originally intended for a Cinema Dress project I never got around to finishing. The center-front portion had already been pin-tucked with entredeux applied, but the panel itself was too short. To extend its length, I added a section at the bottom. For the lace feature, I applied lace to tulle to create a floating effect. The bottom two rows of lace need to be sewn to the tulle before attaching the sleeves, but the top row can be added after the yoke is attached to ensure continuity across the front and back. Once the front and back were assembled, here’s how the side view looks. Honestly, I didn’t go overboard with any intricate techniques; the seam allowances aren’t even serged. But honestly, it doesn’t seem to matter because they’re barely visible between the lace panels. Don’t be afraid to experiment here! Heirloom sewing is beautiful, but if you’re not quite ready for it yet, take it step by step. Try a few details and “cheat” the rest of the way if necessary! ![Side View](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/ca56818e74798fc0061c610f006f83ae.jpg) Of course, I wore it with my Hollywood Trousers… ![Back View](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/cdefa3269e86edd3dfd116d8544d015a.jpg) ![Front View](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/db5449be2406c3a1fbea685ce59b8bac.jpg) This method of applying lace is straightforward and fast since I positioned the lace directly against the seam and used a small zigzag stitch afterward. Alternatively, you could apply the lace over the seam to hide it. Now that I’m reflecting on it, I wonder if someone with an embroidery machine might be able to create some truly innovative designs using this pattern! Interestingly, I skipped the tea-staining this time, and the overall effect turned out better than expected. The central lace and entredeux are bright white, while the fabric and thinner lace are more creamy, giving the blouse a slightly modern twist. Initially, I was a bit concerned, but now that it’s complete, I really like the result. Are you considering trying this pattern? I hope so! You can grab a copy of the Afternoon Tea Blouse right here.
