Frosted season should be replaced with warm boots

On October 23rd, the "Frost" solar term arrives, marking the final stage of autumn. After this point, the weather gradually transitions from late autumn to early winter. Experts have issued warnings about the increased risk of various health issues during this period, including respiratory infections, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea. With a sudden drop in temperature, Beijing experienced its lowest temperature on October 18th at just 4°C. In response to such abrupt weather changes, medical professionals advise people to be particularly cautious about their digestive health. The gastrointestinal system is highly sensitive to cold, making it essential to protect it from external irritants. Wang Yi, director of the Dietary Nutrition Department at Guang’anmen Hospital, explained that cold weather can disrupt the body's autonomic functions and disturb normal gastrointestinal motility. To maintain digestive health, it’s crucial to “nourish the stomach.” First and foremost, keep your abdomen warm by dressing appropriately. Second, focus on eating warm, soft, and easily digestible foods. Avoid cold or hard items, limit strong stimulants, and don’t overeat. TCM experts also remind people, especially women who often wear high heels, to pay extra attention to keeping their feet warm. Peng Yuqing, head of the Sub-Health Department at the East Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, emphasized that after the Frost season, protecting the feet and knees is vital to prevent cold-related illnesses such as chronic stomach issues, digestive ulcers, and “old cold legs.” Wearing open-toed high heels in this season is not advisable. Instead, opt for warm boots and thicker socks to keep your feet insulated. In terms of diet, it’s recommended to follow the principle of “spring flowers, autumn fruits,” focusing on foods that strengthen the spleen and lungs while being sweet and moist. This season is ideal for consuming tubers, sweet potatoes, hawthorn, yams, goji berries, and other similar foods, which should be cooked before consumption. Other healthy options include lilies, honey, jujubes, sesame, and walnuts. However, spicy and grilled foods should be consumed in moderation to avoid internal coldness. Additionally, maintaining proper footwear is important. Old shoes can be repurposed creatively instead of being discarded. For instance, they can be transformed into decorative items or used for practical purposes. It’s also wise to use breathable, antibacterial socks to prevent unpleasant odors. Cleaning matte shoe surfaces requires gentle methods, and some sports shoes come with hidden features that serve multiple purposes. High heels may produce unwanted sounds, but there are simple ways to reduce them. During pregnancy, choosing the right shoes is essential for safety, and avoiding moldy shoes is key to maintaining hygiene. Certain types of shoes worn in summer may actually be harmful to your health.
