Today we're kicking off the Butterfly Skirt sew-along over in the sew-alongs group of the discussion forums. I’m really excited about this one, and I hope you'll join us!
While you’re getting started with your project, I thought I’d share a quick tip for a simple modification that works beautifully with this pattern—and many other Oliver + S designs too.
You might have seen it before: adding an adjustable elastic waist to skirts or pants with a smooth front and elastic back. It’s a clever way to make garments more versatile and long-lasting. Whether you’re not entirely sure of the sizing (like when sewing for kids who live far away) or if you want something that can grow with them, this tweak is super handy. Plus, it makes hand-me-downs a breeze!
Here's what you’ll need:
- Buttonhole elastic (fresh from the fabric shop or salvaged from an old garment)
- Two small buttons
The process is surprisingly straightforward. When you reach the step where you usually insert the elastic into the back waistband, opt for buttonhole elastic instead. Leave the ends exposed rather than stitching them shut. Then, sew one button just beside each elastic opening. Simply loop the elastic through the button to adjust the fit—voilà , problem solved!
This technique isn’t limited to the Butterfly Skirt. I’ve seen it done on Badminton shorts, Sailboat pants, and even other skirt patterns. If you’ve tried it yourself with a different Oliver + S design, I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below.
