Are you a beginner in sewing, returning to the craft, or simply searching for a pattern that countless sewists have loved? Lori, one of our esteemed Advisors Circle members, is sharing her favorite Liesl + Co. sewing pattern that she’s truly tested and trusted. Thank you so much for joining us today, Lori!
What exactly makes a pattern “tried and true For me, it's about revisiting the same pattern repeatedly because it consistently works well. Additionally, it’s a pattern that’s easy to customize. My latest tried-and-true pick is the Liesl + Co. Maritime Knit Top.
This past fall, I made my very first Maritime top strictly following the pattern with only minor tweaks—like swapping the neck facing for a bias-cut neckband and rounding the boat neckline, which I personally prefer. Playing around with stripes is always fun, and I often opt for the bias cut—it adds a touch of flair. The Maritime’s design elements, including its excellent fit, appropriate length, and stylish side slits, truly transform a simple knit top into something sophisticated and chic.
For my second Maritime top, I experimented with some coordinating knits I had purchased. I decided to add a yoke detail, using the front sleeve notches as a guide for the yoke’s point. Beyond that, it was a straightforward construction with the addition of long sleeves. I couldn’t resist incorporating the yoke on the back as well, creating a unique look that blended modern and classic styles.
As the holidays approached, I found myself yearning for a velvet t-shirt to spice up my wardrobe. The Maritime pattern seemed perfect for this idea. I adapted the pattern by adding long sleeves and cropping the hem slightly—cutting an inch off the bottom and opting for a deep two-inch hem to give the velvet a substantial finish. This approach added just the right amount of structure to the softness of the velvet.
Inspired by a woven shirt I spotted on Pinterest, my third Maritime top took inspiration from a color palette of brown, navy, cream, and mustard. I sourced the perfect jersey knits and one piece of French terry from Mood Fabrics, creating a bold color-blocked design for the front. I adore how the large squares and contrasting colors come together. The back remains solid navy, and I eliminated the side slits for a cleaner silhouette.
With its versatility and endless customization options, the Liesl + Co. Maritime Knit Top has become a staple in my sewing repertoire. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned sewist, this pattern is a must-have. Not only does it create a fantastic addition to any wardrobe, but it also encourages creativity and experimentation. So why wait? Grab the Maritime Knit Top pattern and dive into your next sewing project!
