I know exactly what you're thinking. The moment you saw the word "culottes," you probably cringed and were ready to bolt. But hear me out—these aren't your grandma's culottes. If you're my age or older, you might associate them with outdated styles from decades past. Trust me, though, this is a whole new take on the classic culotte. Give me a moment to introduce you to our latest creation, the Girl Friday Culottes pattern. I promise you won't regret it.
Take a look at the image below. These culottes resemble a full skirt more than anything else, and an incredibly chic one at that. Surprisingly, they're quite versatile. They've actually become a go-to piece in my wardrobe, which might surprise you. They feature hidden side pockets—no ordinary on-seam ones, but something much cooler—and a cleverly concealed (and surprisingly easy-to-sew) zipper tucked inside the left pocket. There are also pleats that disguise the waistband, making them look more like a skirt, along with flattering back darts for a smooth silhouette. By the way, did you know culottes can be surprisingly figure-flattering? It's true!
For those of you who lean toward classic styles, you can wear these in a "New Look" kind of way. Think Christian Dior, 1947. Do you remember the iconic image that defined that era? You've likely seen it before.

Obviously, the Girl Friday Culottes aren't a replica of the New Look, but they can certainly be styled in a similar vein—narrow waist, full skirt, classic/vintage flair. Some of Dior's dress designs even had a hint of culottes. Tuck in your blouse or tee and pair with some heels, and voila—a timeless, feminine look. The fact that they're culottes just adds to their charm. You can cycle around, chase after the school bus (like we did yesterday when it arrived ten minutes early), or hit the dance floor, and still look effortlessly stylish. Add classic heels and a bold lip, and you're set.

Alternatively, you can give these culottes a modern twist with a boxy top, like the one I'm wearing in the photo above. Interested in sewing your own? Stay tuned for a tutorial. Or, if you're feeling daring, try pairing them with a long, oversized tunic or sweater for that It Girl vibe. This look is all about volume and requires a bit more confidence than the classic approach, but it’s perfect for fashion-forward moments.
Personally, I just love how adaptable they are. They're genuinely wearable.

Now, doesn't that make sense? I've been rocking these linen culottes all summer and have received countless compliments, especially from my New York friends who are always ahead of the trend. Did I mention this pattern goes up to size 20? All our new patterns now come in sizes 0-20.
The fabric options for this pattern are virtually limitless. Use a lightweight, drapey material for a sleek look, like the dark red version made from Robert Kaufman’s silk/cotton Radiance. It’s lightweight, drapes beautifully, and has a subtle sheen—plus, it’s machine washable. Our model adored them, so I gifted them to her.
I shared a few previews of this pattern on Instagram last spring, and they garnered a very positive response. The black linen version in my Instagram photos was crafted from handkerchief linen sourced from Gray Lines Linen, while the clay-colored version below is made from heavyweight washed silk I found at Mood. Here's the side view—I love how the skirt subtly flares.

And here’s the back with those darts for shaping:

Heavier fabrics can create a fuller-looking skirt, as seen in these navy culottes made from a cotton/wool blend (also from Mood). They'll be perfect for colder weather—they might even keep you warm on New York's chilliest days.

Believe it or not, this shorter gray version is made from classic Kona cotton. I tailored them slightly for a more casual vibe. For more styling ideas and length variations, check out the Pinterest board.

I’m still itching to make a pair from silk faille for a super dressy look. Imagine them in navy or a soft pink—perfect for both casual T-shirts and formal events alike.
That’s everything. I wasn’t exaggerating when I said culottes! You can find all the details here. Can’t wait to see what you create with yours.
