It's been quite some time since I shared a new sewing project with you. I crafted this jacket not long after releasing the Weekend Getaway pattern, but I never really discussed it in detail or explained how I put it together. Well, better late than never—today, I’m finally going to tell you all about it!
The summer coat I made is such a versatile piece. It’s perfect for replacing a
Cardigan during warmer weather, especially when you're dealing with overly aggressive air conditioning or cooler evenings. It also works wonders as a lightweight layer against harsh sunlight. If you're mindful about protecting your skin from UV rays (and let's face it, most of us are these days), this is an effortless way to keep cool while staying safe. Plus, it adds a touch of polish to any outfit, particularly for evening looks. I love how it elongates your silhouette and gives everything a more refined vibe. Check out some of the inspirations I gathered from our Liesl + Co Weekend Getaway Blouse + Dress Pinterest board. I especially enjoy seeing it paired in stark contrast with the color underneath, like the natural linen coat over black or the black coat over all-white ensembles.
For those who might want to try something similar for colder months, you can definitely sew it using heavier fabrics and wear it as a winter coat. Here are a few more examples to give you an idea.
You can find all these images and more on our Liesl + Co Weekend Getaway Dress + Blouse Pinterest board. It's a fantastic resource for additional styling ideas.
Now, onto how I modified the basic Weekend Getaway pattern to create my jacket. It was surprisingly simple! I just widened the front facing slightly to allow the dress to be worn open. When it came time to sew the center front seam, I simply skipped that step altogether. Additionally, I added side vents to the side seams, which you can easily do by following our side vent tutorial. By the way, I'll be showing you another project where I used those side vents soon—stay tuned!
That’s pretty much all there was to it. As you can see, Maria’s pink wool coat version includes a lining and a button, which is a bit fancier than my unlined version. But whether you go simple or add a few extra touches, this is an easy and quick project that can become a fantastic addition to your wardrobe. Believe it or not, this jacket is actually part of my summer wardrobe staples!
