This has led to the depletion of the ozone layer, creating a "hole" that allows more harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth's surface. As a result, the incidence of skin cancer and other UV-related health issues has risen dramatically, posing serious risks to human well-being.
To combat this growing concern, the national standard GB/T 18830-2009 was introduced, providing guidelines for evaluating the UV protection performance of textiles. According to this standard, any fabric with a UV Protection Factor (UPF) greater than 40 and a UV transmission rate (UVA) below 5% can be classified as a UV-protective product. These fabrics play a crucial role in shielding the skin from harmful UV rays, offering an effective solution for sun protection.
Currently, there are two primary methods used to produce UV-resistant textiles:
1. **Using UV-protective fibers during the spinning process**: This method involves incorporating UV-blocking materials directly into the fiber. The most common approach is to mix inorganic ceramic micropowders with polymer chips to create a masterbatch. During the spinning or polymerization stage, these materials are integrated into the fibers, enabling them to absorb UV radiation effectively, especially in the range of 280 nm to 400 nm.
2. **Applying functional UV-protective finishes**: This technique involves coating the fabric with special UV-absorbing agents that bond firmly with the textile. This method is often used for existing fabrics that need additional UV protection without altering their base material.
Today, UV-resistant textiles are widely available in various forms, including outdoor sportswear, UV-blocking shirts, parasols, curtains, and tents. These products are increasingly popular among consumers who seek protection from the sun, especially during outdoor activities. With rising awareness of UV dangers, the demand for such textiles continues to grow, making them an essential part of everyday life in sunny climates.
